Why Are We Rushing to Send America’s Children Back to a Broken Education System?

August 27, 2020

For the past month, politicians on both sides of the aisle have been passionately debating how and when America's children should go back to school, yet none of them have dared ask if they should.

Findings from the Pew Research Center have the US in 38th place out of 71 countries when it comes to math scores and 24th place when it comes to science. Two out of three children did not meet the standards for reading proficiency set by the National Assessment of Educational Progress, and yet the US spends over $700 billion on public education. We need to face the facts that America's broken education system is the chief liability for America's future. With American parents finally taking education into their hands (due to the pandemic) by assembling small learning groups, hiring experts to teach their children, and utilizing online homeschooling programs, why should politicians (specifically Republicans) encourage a return to public school? Republicans criticize Teacher Unions, so why are they okay with handing America's future back to them?

Government control and influence over education has led to stagnation and over standardization in learning. Public school curriculum is out of date and not designed to educate children in a way that will make them competitive in America's job market. This over-standardization (created by federal guidelines) has prohibited teachers from creating individualized learning plans with long-term goals for each student.

Because of school closings, we are now in a position to redefine what American education looks like. Maybe it's group learning or online homeschooling; it's really up to America's parents to decide. So why are politicians in such a rush to send America's children back to a broken system that no political party is first, even talking about fixing and second, can’t be fixed because of the level of bureaucracy and political interests around it? If Republican lawmakers are smart, they will take this opportunity to finally break down Government influence over education and encourage parents to continue to educate their children at home.

An added bonus to that strategy is the fewer children in a broken system, the smaller it gets, and the easier it becomes to eventually overhaul and truly bring education into the 21st Century.
