The Blatant Hypocrisy of Boycotting Anti-Abortion States

Weeks or even days after several states passed anti-abortion legislation, several notable companies, celebrities, and CEO’s stated that they would no longer consider movie or TV-show production in any U.S. state which passes such legislation.

What Happened?

Huge corporations such as Disney and Netflix are threatening to pull production from Georgia after Gov. Brian Kemp passed legislation banning abortion after a fetal heartbeat is detected, usually after 6 weeks. Disney CEO Bob Iger told Reuters that “I think people who work for us will not want to work for us will not want to work there, and we will have to heed their wishes in that regard. Right now, we are watching it very carefully.”

The Chief Content Officer of Netflix Ted Sarandos issued a statement saying that their company has “many women working on productions in Georgia, whose rights, along with millions of others, will be severely restricted by this law. Given the legislation has not yet been implemented, we’ll continue to film there, while also supporting partners and artists who choose not to. Should it ever come into effect, we’d rethink our entire investment in Georgia.”

Notable actresses such as Sophie Turner and Jessica Chastain declared that they will not work in states which limit access to abortions.

The Hypocrisy

Hollywood save us your false outrage, hypocrisy and crocodile tears. Your virtue signaling is disgusting and ruinous to the social fabric of this country. Individuals such as those noted above are a part of why American culture is so divided today.

Disney, you are so sickened of anti-abortion legislation? Then why didn't you pull your production from Jordan and several other places which completely outlaw abortion? If you care so much about “human rights”, then why are you working with China— a country which imprisons millions of innocent Muslims simply because of their religion?

How about you close your $5.5 Billion resort which just opened in Shanghai. Of course you won't— because this is all false outrage being used as a political weapon against American conservatism and anyone who disagrees with you.

Netflix, if you are so pained by the thought of anti-abortion legislation, then why don’t you pull your production out of countries such as Egypt which almost bans abortion entirely?

Sophie Turner, if you feel that it’s immoral to work in a place which has anti-abortion legislation, then why did you agree to film in Northern Ireland for Game of Thrones— another country where abortion is illegal.

If Hollywood wants to play this game, the American people will play it right back by boycotting your TV shows and movies. Remember, there are tens of millions of pro-life and conservative individuals who you rely on to make a profit.

Treating conservatives and conservative viewpoints as less-than will simply backfire and potentially lead to the bankruptcy of your companies. Boycott tactics are childish and should be looked down upon. However, Hollywood better be careful what they wish for by playing with fire.

If you are so sickened that the American people vote democratically to no longer have access to unconstitutional and immoral abortions— then your stances need to be re-evaluated. No state in America is a totalitarian dictatorship— the people vote in politicians who will fight for what they believe.

Conservatives: The correct path is always paved by consistent opposition, failures, and condemnation. Doing what is right is never easy. Do not cave in and let these boycott tactics make you think what you’re doing is wrong. Remember what Edmund Burke stated: “liberty does not exist in the absence of morality.”
