There is an effort by politicians to remove God from the culture. Because God is a threat to the absolute power they so desperately want. It’s important that we understand what they’re doing because freedom is under attack and we need to know how to fight back.
America’s political system gives power to the people by giving freedom to the individual. But power hungry politicians don’t want us to have freedom because freedom is power and the more power the people have, the less power government has.
So they plan to destroy freedom in two ways.
1. Through deceitful tactics designed to persuade us we need powerful government by promising safety, justice and benefits.
2. By removing God from the culture.
Freedom is like an engine that must be fueled by two things.
2. Absolute Truth
Without these things freedom cannot survive. And without God, there is no real morality or absolute truth. But why are these things so important?
Without morality, the people will abuse the freedom you give them.
Benjamin Franklin said “Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters.”
The reason we have prisons is because there are people who cannot handle the responsibility of freedom. And ultimately, in a civil society, people must be controlled, either from within or from without; either by government, or by morality.
Edmund Burke sums this up perfectly, “Men are qualified for civil liberty in exact proportion to their disposition to put moral chains upon their own appetites… and the less of it there is within, the more there must be without.”
But where does morality come from? God. He’s the One that gives us the standard of right and wrong, and He’s the One the empowers us to do what is right.
John Jay said, "I very concisely remarked that if there was no God there could be no moral obligations, and I did not see how society could subsist without them.”
As soon as we eliminate God, morality goes out the window. Without God, what’s the point in being moral? In fact, without God, there really isn’t any such thing as morality. If life is just a big accident with no greater purpose or accountability, the only thing that really makes since is to do whatever feels good. Pleasure becomes god and this can only lead to immorality.
According to Samuel Adams, “public liberty will not long survive the total extinction of morals.”
2. Absolute Truth
Without absolute truth, freedom has no foundation. We have a free country today, because our founders held deep convictions on certain timeless, absolute truths.
The Declaration of Independence says, “we hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights and that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”
These truths gave our founders the ideology and conviction to establish a government of the people. And these truths came straight from God’s Word.
Margret Thatcher said, “If you accept freedom, you’ve got to have principles about the responsibility. You can’t do this without a biblical foundation. Your Founding Fathers came over with that. They came over with the doctrines of the New Testament as well as the Old.”
But if God doesn’t exist, neither do these principles, and if these principles don’t exist… freedom has no foundation.
Samuel Adams said “A general dissolution of principles… will more surely overthrow the liberties of America than the whole force of the common enemy.”
So to summarize, without God, you have no truth, and without truth, freedom has no foundation and will not survive. When people reject God, they must reject the truth that their rights come from God. Consequently, this puts their rights in the hands of the government and history shows us what a disaster this is.
Thomas Jefferson said, “God who gave us life gave us liberty. And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are of the Gift of God?”
So lets wrap things up. Essentially, there are people who want absolute power and therefore don’t want the people to have freedom. And they know, that our strong belief in God is what has enabled us to prosper as a free country. So they attack our freedom by doing everything they can to remove God from the government and culture. Because without God we become immoral and we lose the absolute truth freedom was founded on. And without morality and these absolute truths, freedom cannot survive.
Reagan said, “Without God there is a coarsening of the society; without God democracy will not and cannot long endure… If we ever forget that we are One Nation Under God, then we will be a Nation gone under.”
So what can we do to fight back against this attack on God?
1. We can choose to stand firm in our faith in God.
2. We can share our faith with those around us.
3. We can use our freedom to influence government by petitioning, calling our r representatives, electing leaders who honor God…. and on and on the list goes. We still have power to make a difference, we just have to use it.
4. And last, we can pray. Pray for our leaders and pray for the people to turn to God.
We’ve got to understand that the real battle in this nation is spiritual, and we must fight back spiritually.
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn warned us, "All attempts to find a way out of the plight of today’s world are fruitless unless we redirect our consciousness, in repentance, to the Creator of all. Without this, not exit will be illumined and we shall seek it in vain.”
